Bandwidth

What is bandwidth?

bandwidth is the capacity for a given system to transfer data over a connection. It is common to measure bandwidth as bit rate or how many bits are send in one second. for example 1Mbps equal to sending 1,000,000 bits in 1 second.

Different hardware media type have different bandwidth. For example an Ethernet card have 10Mbps while T1 connection only support 1.544Mbps. A list of common connection can be found here Internet connection speeds.

bandwidth and websites

If you had a chance of running a web server you often see a limitation in bandwidth. some web-hosts limit the amount of data downloaded per month, for example 300 gigabyte per month. This kind of limition let the webmaster come up with creative ideas for reducing the amount of bandwidth from the website or to do bandwidth optimization .

Simulation

The bandwidth simulation shows how bandwidth is used in telecommunication.

The time of transmitting a big data size over a large bandwidth is roughly equale to transmitting small data size over a small bandwidth (more data to transmite with faster bandwidth).

When the same data size is transmitted over different bandwidth there is a big difference in time.Transmitting the same data size over different bandwidth will also have a big difference in time. The terms large , big , small are only helping us to understand the basic concept of bandwidth. To calculate the exact transmission time of a single data segment please refere to our Transmission Time tutorial.
